A class action settlement has been approved against Shimano, Specialized Bicycle Components, Trek Bicycle Corporation, and Giant Bicycle over defective Hollowtech II cranksets that were subject to a September 2023 recall for a crash hazard caused by crank arm separation. If you purchased, received, or owned an affected Shimano crankset or a bicycle equipped with one in the United States, you may be eligible for reimbursement of replacement costs and an extended warranty.
Claim Deadline: August 4, 2026 | Benefits: Reimbursement + Extended Warranty | Proof Required: Yes (receipts for reimbursement)
What Is This Settlement About?
In September 2023, Shimano voluntarily recalled certain Hollowtech II cranksets manufactured before July 2019 due to reports of crank arm bonding separation and delamination that could cause the crank arm to detach during use, posing a crash hazard. This class action settlement, which received final court approval on February 4, 2026, provides reimbursement for out-of-pocket replacement costs, an extended warranty, and enhanced inspection procedures at authorized retailers.
Which Cranksets Are Affected?
The settlement covers the following Shimano Hollowtech II cranksets manufactured before July 2019:
- Ultegra FC-6800
- Ultegra FC-R8000
- Dura-Ace FC-9000
- Dura-Ace FC-R9100
- Dura-Ace FC-R9100-P (power meter version)
You are eligible if you purchased, received, were given, or owned one of these cranksets or a bicycle equipped with one of these cranksets in the United States.
What Benefits Are Available?
The settlement provides three categories of benefits:
- Reimbursement: Settlement members can receive reimbursement of reasonable, documented out-of-pocket costs for purchasing a replacement crankset and having it installed, when the replacement was due to bonding separation or delamination (or evidence of it). You must submit receipts, work orders, credit card statements, or other documentation.
- Extended Warranty: Shimano will extend the duration of its Express Warranty coverage for bonding separation and delamination on affected cranksets through July 29, 2027. This extension is automatic and does not require a claim form.
- Enhanced Inspections: Shimano will distribute magnifying devices with enhanced lighting to every recall retailer and make Shimano employees available to retailers to advise on inspection procedures.
