Shimano Crankset Recall Settlement
Shimano has reached a class action settlement following its September 2023 voluntary recall of approximately 760,000 Hollowtech II cranksets after receiving over 4,500 reports of bonding separation incidents. The settlement provides warranty extensions through July 2027, reimbursement for replacement costs, and enhanced inspection programs. If you own an affected crankset, file your claim by August 4, 2026.
What Is This Case About?
A class action alleged that Shimano’s recall process for defective Hollowtech II cranksets was inadequate. The cranksets are vulnerable to bonding separation, which can cause a crankarm to detach during riding — a serious safety hazard. The lawsuit also named major bicycle retailers Specialized, Trek, and Giant. The settlement received final court approval on February 2, 2026.
Who Is Eligible?
U.S. consumers who purchased, received, or owned any of the following Shimano Hollowtech II cranksets manufactured before July 2019, or a bicycle equipped with one:
- Ultegra FC-6800
- Ultegra FC-R8000
- Dura-Ace FC-9000
- Dura-Ace FC-R9100
- Dura-Ace FC-R9100-P
What Benefits Are Available?
- Warranty extension for bonding separation and delamination through July 29, 2027 (automatic based on serial number)
- Reimbursement for out-of-pocket costs for replacement cranksets and installation made before September 21, 2023 after original warranty expired
- Enhanced inspection program — Shimano distributing magnifying devices and updated inspection manuals to recall retailers
