How Long Does an Equifax Credit Score Error Settlement Claim Take to Pay?

Expect at least months of waiting after you file, with the earliest payments falling in 2027. No payout date is set because the administrator can pay only after the court grants final approval and the settlement becomes final, including appeals. This is the $100 million settlement over an Equifax coding error that gave lenders different credit scores or attributes than consumers should have received. You cannot be paid before the filing deadline passes and the court finishes its review.

Why is there no payout date yet?

ClassActionTracker notes in its settlement notice that payment must wait until the settlement becomes final and effective. That stage requires final court approval. It also requires resolution of any appeals.

Ginsburg Law Group explains the practical result is months of waiting after filing. The earliest possible payments fall after the January hearing and any appeals. Filing early does not move payment earlier.

Which dates control payment?

Money reports in its claim filing guide that online claims must be filed by December 28, 2026. Mailed claims must be postmarked by the same date. Payment cannot precede that deadline plus court processing. Credit and Collection News reports in its settlement approval report that Judge Leigh Martin May granted preliminary approval on Aug. 17, 2026.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia set the final fairness hearing for Jan. 22, 2027 at 2 p.m. in Atlanta. Payment can occur only after that hearing and later final-approval steps.

Who is covered and what will each person receive?

Money reports the case covers about 4 million U.S. consumers. It applies when Equifax reported a score or credit attribute to a lender or other third party between March 17 and April 8, 2022 that differed because of its coding error.

Valid claimants will split the $100 million non-reversionary fund in equal shares. ClassActionTracker estimates the shares at about $95 to $280 each after court-approved fees and administration costs. The final amount will vary with claim volume.

What must you do to receive payment?

Payment is not automatic. Online claims require the Claim ID and PIN from the mailed or emailed notice.

Mailed claims require a signed claim form. Check these steps before the deadline: Doing nothing yields no money while still binding class members if the court approves the settlement.

  • Find your Claim ID and PIN from the settlement notice.
  • File online or mail a signed form postmarked by December 28, 2026.
  • Keep a copy of your confirmation or mailing receipt for your records.
