How Does the Meta-Snap Addiction Trial Impact Pending Settlements?

The Meta-Snap addiction trial does not create a payout for pending claims. It may shape settlement talks through bellwether verdicts and private deals. A bellwether is a test trial drawn from mass litigation. It lets both sides measure claims about product design and teen harm.

OpenClassActions reports the Los Angeles case sits in Social Media Cases, JCCP 5255 before Judge Carolyn B. Kuhl, in its OpenClassActions trial update. Jury selection started Oct. 28, 2026, with opening statements set for Nov. 4.

What changed at the Los Angeles trial?

Meta settled confidentially with bellwether plaintiffs S.J. and 18-year-old K.D.B. during jury selection. That left Snap as the sole defendant, according to the AFP report via TechXplore.

The deal terms were not disclosed. TikTok and Google's YouTube had already settled with both teens. Law Commentary reports Meta had earlier settled with S.J., so Snap now faces claims from both teens alone. The trial therefore tests Snap's liability rather than joint liability.

Is there a settlement you can claim now?

No. There is no global settlement for individual injury claims. LegalScoops reports 3,824 cases were pending in federal MDL 3047 as of Oct. 1, 2026, plus over 3,000 in the California JCCP, in its LegalScoops case tracker.

That means families with filed cases stay in the litigation queue. There is no new claim form tied to the Los Angeles trial. School-district cases also remain on a separate track.

What do past payouts actually cover?

The only individual verdict so far is a $6 million award to K.G.M. on March 25, 2026. LegalScoops reports the jury split fault 70% to Meta and 30% to YouTube. That verdict is now on appeal.

A separate $17.1 billion deal does not pay private injury claims. The Connecticut Attorney General announcement says Meta reached that multistate agreement on Aug. 26, 2026 with 51 attorneys general. It resolved state youth-safety claims and required teen safety reforms.

What will move pending case values next?

Confidential deals and one appealed verdict do not fix a price per case. Reuters via Hindu BusinessLine notes Meta's bellwether terms are confidential and the K.G.M. verdict turned on Section 230 and product-design issues. Neither sets a binding per-person value for pending cases.

Lawyers will still use bellwether outcomes as mediation benchmarks. LegalScoops reports those benchmarks may affect thousands of pending family claims and more than 1,000 school-district suits. The first federal school trial is set for Feb. 2027.
