If you filed in the Labcorp AMCA settlement, this is a different case with a different claim form: a $6,438,578.20 settlement with Sonic Healthcare U.S.A. and its labs covers people who got a breach notice from Clinical Pathology Laboratories or Austin Pathology Associates. Eligible claimants can take an estimated $50 with no paperwork, or up to $5,000 in documented losses, and add two years of medical data monitoring to either choice.
Status: Claims open; preliminary approval granted | Claim deadline January 4, 2027 (online, or postmarked) | Opt out or object by December 3, 2026
A Second Settlement From the AMCA Breach
American Medical Collection Agency (AMCA) was a billing collections agency that diagnostic labs used to pursue amounts patients owed. AMCA reported that its computer systems were affected between approximately August 1, 2018 and March 30, 2019. The breach produced a federal multidistrict litigation, In re: American Medical Collection Agency, Inc. Customer Data Security Breach Litigation, No. 19-md-2904 (JKS)(MAH), MDL 2904, before Judge Jamel K. Semper in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
This settlement resolves the claims against Sonic Healthcare U.S.A., Aurora Diagnostics LLC, Clinical Pathology Laboratories, Inc. and Austin Pathology Associates, companies that provide diagnostic testing and formerly used AMCA. It is separate from the $35 million Labcorp AMCA settlement, which covered people whose information Labcorp sent to AMCA and whose claim deadline was September 3, 2026. Filing in one does not file you in the other.
Plaintiffs contend that names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, addresses, credit card information, bank information and medical provider-related information could potentially have been accessed. The defendants deny all claims and any wrongdoing or liability, and the court has not decided in favor of either side.
The Class Is Defined by the Notice, Not the Lab Visit
The notice’s headline asks whether you received diagnostic services from these companies, but the class definition is narrower. You are in the class only if:
- Clinical Pathology Laboratories (CPL), or AMCA on CPL’s behalf, sent you notice that your information was or may have been involved in the AMCA incident; or
- Austin Pathology Associates, or AMCA on its behalf, sent you that kind of notice.
Having had lab work at a Sonic company without receiving that breach notice is not enough. The defendants and their officers and directors, the judges assigned to the case and anyone convicted of causing the incident are excluded. The settlement documents do not say how many people are in the class.
Pick One Cash Option, Then Decide on Monitoring
| Alternative Cash Payment | Estimated at $50. No documentation, only a signed attestation under penalty of perjury. |
| Out-of-Pocket Losses | Up to $5,000 for documented, unreimbursed losses fairly traceable to the incident. |
| Medical data monitoring | Up to two years of CyEx Medical Shield Pro medical and healthcare information monitoring. Can be added to either cash option, but only if you check its box. |
Covered losses include identity theft or medical fraud losses; professional services such as credit repair; notary, fax, postage, copying, mileage and long-distance charges; credit monitoring bought on or after August 1, 2018; and up to 10 hours of documented time at $25 an hour. The notice says self-prepared documents such as handwritten receipts are not enough on their own. Loss payments can be adjusted pro rata.
Why $50 Is an Estimate
The fund is non-reversionary, so no money goes back to the defendants. The $50 figure is what is expected to remain after administration costs, attorneys’ fees and expenses, service awards, taxes and Out-of-Pocket Losses are paid, split evenly among valid claimants. More claims mean a smaller payment; fewer claims mean a larger one.
Class counsel will ask for attorneys’ fees and expenses of up to 34% of the fund, about $2.19 million, plus service awards of $5,000 for each class representative. All of it comes out of the $6,438,578.20 before the cash payments are calculated.
Filing Online Versus by Mail
The online claim form opens with a login that asks for the Class Member ID printed on your notice. The mail-in claim form asks for the Notice ID Number only “if known,” so a class member who no longer has the notice can still file on paper. The trade-off: electronic payment is available only to claims filed online. Mailed claims are paid by check to the address on the form. Claims are subject to verification, and the administrator may ask for more information.
Deadlines
| December 3, 2026 | Opt-out requests must be mailed and postmarked. The notice says objections must be postmarked by this date, while the settlement agreement and the website’s dates page say received; objections can also be filed through the court’s ECF system. Sending early avoids the conflict. |
| January 4, 2027 | Claim deadline — submitted online or postmarked by mail. The notice gives no time of day or timezone. |
| January 7, 2027, 11:00 a.m. ET | Final Fairness Hearing at the Frank R. Lautenberg U.S. Post Office & Courthouse, Newark, New Jersey. The date and time may change without further notice. |
How to File
Claims go through the official Sonic AMCA settlement website, run by Kroll Settlement Administration, which also posts a printable claim form. The broader AMCA settlement hub links to both the Sonic and Labcorp settlements, which helps if you are not sure which notice you received.
Benefits are distributed only if the court grants final approval and after any appeals are resolved or the time to appeal runs out. As of October 8, 2026, no payment date had been announced. The AMCA Sonic Healthcare settlement page on OpenClassActions.com follows the case through the January hearing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as the Labcorp AMCA settlement?
No. It is a separate settlement in the same multidistrict litigation, with its own $6,438,578.20 fund, class, claim form and January 4, 2027 deadline. The Labcorp settlement’s claim deadline was September 3, 2026.
Does everyone who used a Sonic Healthcare lab qualify?
No. The class covers people who received notice from Clinical Pathology Laboratories or Austin Pathology Associates, or from AMCA on their behalf, that their information was or may have been involved in the AMCA incident.
Can I get both the $50 and Out-of-Pocket Losses?
No. Each claimant chooses one cash option. Two years of medical and healthcare information monitoring can be added to either one.
Is the $50 guaranteed?
No. It is an estimate. The payment is what remains in the fund after fees, administration, service awards, taxes and loss claims, divided evenly among valid claimants.
Do I need the Class Member ID?
To file online, yes, because the online form logs in with it. The mail-in form asks for the Notice ID only if known, but mailed claims are paid by check rather than electronically.
Is the monitoring automatic?
No. The two years of CyEx Medical Shield Pro monitoring must be selected on the claim form.
