Amazon’s Potential Supplemental Refund: Why the $200 Total Is Conditional

The $200 total — an initial refund plus a possible supplement — is not guaranteed. The Federal Trade Commission says Amazon pays the extra amount only if accepted payments miss a required threshold by February 2027, in the September update from the Federal Trade Commission.

The Federal Trade Commission says qualifying consumers received up to $51 under the original order. Eligible prior recipients could receive up to $149 more. That would bring the capped combined total to $200 per person, according to Providence Journal reporting on FTC terms, in the FTC terms explained by the Providence Journal.

What triggers the extra payment?

The test measures consumer-accepted payments, not payments sent. The Federal Trade Commission says Amazon owes supplemental automatic payments to prior recipients only when accepted amounts fall short.

No individual application creates the supplement. The outcome turns on group-wide acceptance before the February 2027 checkpoint.

Who is in line for the supplement?

The supplement would go only to eligible prior recipients. It would be divided pro rata, up to $149 per person, according to Providence Journal reporting on FTC terms.

A revised court order separately expands eligibility starting Oct. 1, 2026. The Federal Trade Commission says the expansion covers millions of additional consumers who used 11-20 Prime benefits in a one-year period.

How will automatic payments arrive?

Any supplemental round would begin by April 2027. The Federal Trade Commission says it would be distributed automatically without a claim, like the expanded October payments.

Payments go by Venmo, PayPal or mailed check, with no forms required. Recipients must accept or cash them within 60 days or lose that payment, according to the Associated Press, in the Associated Press report on automatic refunds.

  • Accept a Venmo or PayPal transfer as soon as it appears.
  • Cash a mailed check before day 60.
  • Keep the payment account or mailing address accessible.

What should you do to protect eligibility?

Accept the earlier automatic refund. The Federal Trade Commission's refunds page says that step preserves eligibility for the later $149 supplement, in the current guidance on the FTC refunds page.

Expect no request to pay to receive the money. Keep the 60-day deadline on every payment, because an unaccepted payment is lost.
