Auto Safety Settlement Checks: When Should Claimants Expect Payment Before Year End?

Do not expect a Hyundai-Kia safety check before year end. Both large Hyundai-Kia funds remain unpaid in 2026, while the only recent auto-service payout has already been mailed. An airbag-control-unit settlement pays owners for a faulty safety part that controls airbag deployment. Its timeline and the theft-case appeal explain why most claimants will wait into next year.

Why can't the airbag fund pay yet?

The ACU Settlement administrator says the Hyundai-Kia fund provides $62,100,100 in payments and credits. It reimburses documented out-of-pocket costs first. It then pays residuals up to $350 for recalled vehicles and $150 for unrecalled vehicles. The same administrator says claims must be submitted electronically or postmarked by April 8, 2027, on its Key Dates page.

An open fund cannot make a final before-year-end distribution in 2026. File early, but do not plan spending around December. The ACU Settlement administrator limits the class to owners or lessees as of April 14, 2025. Covered models include specified 2010-2023 Sonata, Kona, Veloster, Forte, Optima and Sedona vehicles.

  • Check eligibility with a VIN lookup
  • Save repair orders, tow bills and rental receipts
  • Submit before the 2027 deadline

Why is the theft settlement still on hold?

The $145M Hyundai-Kia vehicle-theft settlement won final approval on Oct. 1, 2024. Three objectors appealed, and the Ninth Circuit dismissed two appeals on Jan. 8, 2026 and the third on Feb. 25, 2026. As of Oct.

9, 2026, one objector had asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the settlement, class counsel FeganScott reports on its case update page. A decision is expected in late 2026. The firm says no new payment information is expected until then. Co-counsel Hagens Berman says Hyundai and Kia claimants must file through the make-specific administrator sites. Use hyundaitheftsettlement.com or kiatheftsettlement.com, not counsel. Watch only those sites for payment instructions.

Which auto check has already been mailed?

The Federal Trade Commission says it sent checks totaling more than $9.6 million to CarShield and American Auto Shield customers, described in its CarShield case page. The payments followed a $10 million July 2024 settlement.

The case involved allegedly deceptive advertising for vehicle-service contracts. Those contracts promise to cover future car repairs for a fee. If you were not a customer in that refund, this payout does not affect you.

What should you do before December?

Run the free NHTSA recall and VIN check now through its recalls portal. It shows open recalls tied to your car. Complete the listed repair promptly.

Keep every invoice because auto-safety settlements pay documented recall expenses first. Residual payments go only to eligible claimants if funds remain. Store photos, estimates and payment proof together.

  • Confirm your VIN and recall status
  • Keep repair, tow and rental receipts
  • File on the correct make-specific site
  • Track appeal or deadline updates monthly
