Toyota Airbag Control Unit Settlement
Toyota has agreed to a $78.5 million class action settlement over allegations that certain Toyota vehicles were equipped with defective ZF-TRW airbag control units (ACUs) vulnerable to “electrical overstress,” which could cause airbags and other safety systems to fail during a collision. Owners and lessees of eligible 2011–2019 Toyota vehicles may file a claim starting December 16, 2026.
What Is This Case About?
The lawsuit alleges that certain Toyota vehicles were equipped with ZF-TRW airbag control units (ACUs) vulnerable to an electrical overstress (EOS) condition that could cause airbags and other safety systems to fail to deploy during a collision. Toyota denies wrongdoing but agreed to settle. Final court approval was granted November 28, 2023, and the settlement is now fully implemented following dismissal of an appeal on December 11, 2025.

- 2012–2018 Toyota Avalon (standard and Hybrid)
- 2012–2019 Toyota Tacoma
- 2012–2017 Toyota Tundra
- 2012–2017 Toyota Sequoia
